Advice on Ferrets
Advice on Ferrets
Ferrets need daily playtime outside of their cages, but they usually still spend a fair amount of time in their cages when unsupervised. A roomy, well designed cage is a necessity. Some features to look for are solid floors and shelves / balconies. Multi-level cages are an option as are extra shelves, toys and hammocks to keep your ferret stimulated and the option to separate one of the ferrets to the other. This multi–level option facilitates easier cleaning and maintenance of the cage.
Ferrets natural instincts are that they like to be in an enclosed area while sleeping and they need undisturbed sleep, in a dark quiet area without artificial lighting. They cannot be kept in a cage continuously to avoid aggressive or obsessive behaviour. A ferret needs to have a wire cage, preferably with different levels that consists of a meal area, sleeping area, and bathroom area. Ferrets are very neat animals and like to have a separate place for their bathrooms. It is important for the ferret’s living area to have proper ventilation.
Ferrets need:
• Companionship – to be with other ferrets and to have human company.
• A diet of complete dried food supplemented with raw or cooked meat if desired. Meat should not be fed solely as it does not contain all their nutritional requirements.
• A constant supply of fresh, clean drinking water in a drip feed bottle with a metal spout.
• A large home that is kept up off the ground, in an open shed or indoor area out of direct sunlight and strong winds.
• Separate areas inside their home.
• A deep, clean layer of wood shavings on the floor and plenty of fresh meadow hay or old clothing for bedding.
• Toys to play with, like cardboard tubes and wooden cotton reels.
• Their home to be tidied every day and thoroughly cleaned every week.
• A very large, secure area to play in.
• Injections to prevent certain serious diseases.
• To be taken to a veterinary surgeon if they are ill or injured.
• To be looked after when you are away on holiday.
